Nigerian Goalkeeper Receives Hero’s Welcome At Chippa United
Super Eagles of Nigeria goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali received a heroic welcome at South African club Chippa United for his outstanding performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Cote d’Ivoire.
Nwabali’s performances while playing for Chippa United earned him a call-up to the Super Eagles during the 2023 AFCON, where he played a crucial role in helping Nigeria secure a silver medal in the tournament. Upon his return, fans turned out in large numbers to welcome the Nigerian back.
The shot-stopper expressed his gratitude towards the club chairman, Chippa Mpengesi, while highlighting his desire to continue playing for Chippa United. Despite receiving multiple offers from Europe and Saudi Arabia, the Nigerian revealed his willingness to extend his stay at the club for one or two more years.

“When you play under a chairman who understands you, everything falls into place, confidence grows,” Nwabali said. “Playing under a chairman who prioritises the comfort of his players motivates you to give your all, whether you’re in or out of the team.”
“To be honest, I sincerely hope to continue playing for one or two more years under his leadership, that’s my heartfelt desire. If he shares the same sentiment, that would be wonderful, but it’s truly my wish because he’s a wonderful person.”
“He has shown me kindness and I would like to reciprocate that. However, if my time with the club comes to an end at the conclusion of this season, I will accept it gracefully. If there are further opportunities for me to continue, then I’ll embrace them wholeheartedly,” he added.
Chippa United, recognising Nwabali’s contribution on the international stage, highlights the club’s pride in its player. This gesture potentially serves as a morale boost for the Nigerian, as he rejoins the club after an extended break with the conclusion of the AFCON tournament.
Nwabali played a pivotal role throughout the 2023 AFCON, securing his place as Nigeria’s starting goalkeeper. His dedication and talent contributed significantly to the team’s journey, even though they ultimately fell short of claiming the coveted trophy.
