Nigerian Government Hails Resilience of Democracy After 27 Years

Mnena Iyorkegh, Abuja

The Nigerian Government has described the country’s 27 years of uninterrupted democratic governance as a remarkable achievement, reflecting the resilience of its democratic institutions and the unwavering commitment of its citizens to democratic values.

Speaking at a press conference to mark the 2026 Democracy Day celebration and the third anniversary of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris said Democracy Day offers an opportunity to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey and honour those who fought for democratic governance.

Idris paid tribute to the late Chief M.K.O. Abiola and other pro-democracy activists whose sacrifices contributed to the restoration of civilian rule.

He noted that “the country’s uninterrupted democratic experience since 1999 demonstrates Nigerians’ determination to uphold democratic principles despite challenges.”

According to him, this year’s Democracy Day is particularly significant as it coincides with the third anniversary of the Tinubu administration, providing an opportunity to assess progress, review reforms and reaffirm commitment to national development under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Highlighting achievements in the water sector, the Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Prof. Joseph Utsev, said government interventions have expanded access to potable water through the construction and rehabilitation of water supply projects across the country.

He said that “programmes such as PEWASH and SURWASH have benefited over 451,000 Nigerians, while the Greater Dutse Water Supply Project in Jigawa State is expected to serve more than 1.5 million people.”

The Minister of Livestock Development, Idi Mukhtar Maiha said that “the government is promoting ranching and developing grazing reserves to improve livestock productivity and reduce conflicts associated with open grazing.”

He said that work has commenced at the Ka’u Grazing Reserve in the FCT and announced plans to launch a National Ranching Policy.

The press conference formed part of activities marking Democracy Day and provided an update on government achievements across key sectors.
