NiMet, HEDA train Farmers on Climate Information Services

Farmers have been urged to use the climate information resources to improve farming inputs and productivity in the state.

 

The resource person, Chief Agricultural Meteorologist in the Nigeria Meteorological Agency, Mr. James Adamu stated this at one-day training of farmers in Lafia, the state capital.

 

He said the training is to educate farmers on their roles in the production of the season climate prediction and understanding the technicalities involved in such prediction.

 

According to Adamu, “there is need to make climate and weather information readily available to the farmers that are faced with various challenges, weather and climate challenges that has led to a lot of conflicts”, 

 

He therefore urged NiMet to do more in developing new products based on farmers and end users’ need.

 

The Executive Secretary, Human and Environmental Developmental Agenda HEDA, Mr. Suleiman Arigbabu said the training would improve the provision of accurate timely information Services to stakeholders and policy makers in government to use appropriately to plan in order to have maximum production in the Agricultural system.

 

“Nigeria is not food secure and it faces the risk of going further down. Our farmers are not getting the needed information they need at the right time”, he said.

 

A participant and President, Association of Small Scale Agricultural Producers in Nigeria ASSAPIN, Mr. Joshua Jonathan said the training would fast track ways on how to improve service delivery to Farmers.

 

He further said that numerous challenges lead to poor production for farmers.

 

“With the information we are getting today, from NiMet, we are hopeful that there is going to be improvement in terms of productivity of farming calendar planning”, he added
