The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) and the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) have solidified a strategic partnership to accelerate digital literacy across Nigeria’s basic education system.

The Director-General of NITDA, Kashifu Inuwa, hosted the Executive Secretary of UBEC, Dr Aisha Mahmood Garba, to outline a roadmap for embedding digital skills into the core of the basic education system.

Inuwa reiterated that NITDA is committed to exploring how to scale impact and reach the required numbers of the Federal Government’s target of achieving 70% digital literacy by 2027 and 95% by 2030, and partnering with UBEC will significantly accelerate the ability to reach students across the basic education system.

In her remarks, Dr Garba highlighted the urgency of closing the digital gap, noting that recent reforms aim to ensure every Nigerian child, regardless of location, has access to digital tools. The joint effort will focus on inclusive growth, ensuring rural and underserved communities benefit from the over 1,500 existing hubs.

The partnership also aims to harmonise existing frameworks into a unified national curriculum, preparing the next generation for an economy increasingly dominated by automation and artificial intelligence.
