North-East Commission Presents 2026 Budget

The North-East Development Commission (NEDC) has proposed a ₦244.07 billion budget for the 2026 fiscal year.

Presenting the proposal to a joint committee of the Senate and House of Representatives, the Managing Director, Mohammed Alkali, said the budget prioritises critical infrastructure, humanitarian support and socio-economic recovery across the North-East.

Alkali also reported on the Commission’s 2025 budget performance, noting a 100 per cent utilisation of the ₦131.84 billion allocation received and 59 per cent implementation of the ₦290.99 billion total budgeted for the year.

Members of the Joint Committee commended the Commission’s interventions, particularly in infrastructural development across the region and expressed support for its leadership in delivering its statutory mandate.

The committee further urged the commission to increase bursary and scholarship programmes to boost educational development, recovery framework and roadmap for restoring socio-economic development in the North-East.

The session was chaired by the Chairman, Senate Committee on Special Duties, Mr Kaka Shehu Lawan, SAN and co-chaired by the Chairman, House Committee on NEDC, Hon. Usman Zanna.
