The Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA) and the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) have agreed to revive dedicated tourism information desks at major airports across the country to improve visitor experience and promote Nigeria’s tourism offerings.
The decision was announced during a courtesy visit by the Director-General of NTDA, Olayiwola Awakan, to the Managing Director/Chief Executive of FAAN, Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, at FAAN headquarters in Lagos.
Awakan said airports serve as the first and most critical point of contact for international visitors, making them strategic gateways to Nigeria’s tourism sector. “Tourism is about movement, and FAAN plays a huge role in that because for anyone coming into the country, airports are their first point of contact,” he said.
He described Nigeria as rich in tourism potential across all regions, citing cultural heritage, natural attractions, eco-tourism, and adventure destinations as he stressed the need for effective storytelling, reliable data, and seamless travel experiences to reposition Nigeria as a world-class tourism destination.
A key focus of the meeting was the proposed return of tourism information desks at airports to provide arriving passengers with guides, maps, attraction highlights, and local travel information.
Mrs. Kuku welcomed the renewed partnership, describing aviation and tourism as closely linked sectors. She commended Awakan for his longstanding support and reaffirmed FAAN’s readiness to work with NTDA to enhance passenger experience, improve airport infrastructure, and boost domestic and international tourism arrivals.
At the meeting, both agencies agreed to establish a joint committee to coordinate data sharing and oversee collaborative initiatives.
The move is expected to improve Nigeria’s first impression on visitors and strengthen the promotion of the country’s diverse tourism assets from the point of arrival.
