The National Universities Commission (NUC) has fully re-accredited the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) programme at Prince Abubakar Audu University (PAAU), Anyigba, following a 10-year suspension.
The announcement was made in a communiqué issued in Lokoja on Thursday by the Kogi State Commissioner for Health, Dr Abdulazeez Adams Adeiza, who hailed the development as a major milestone in the administration of Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo and a step forward in revitalising medical education and healthcare delivery in the state.
According to Dr Adams, the MBBS programme initially gained accreditation and began in 2012, while the institution was still known as Kogi State University.
However, accreditation was withdrawn in 2015 after a resource verification exercise revealed a lack of required academic staff and critical infrastructure.
He explained that the administration of former Governor Yahaya Bello, which assumed office in 2016, took swift action to mitigate the impact of the withdrawal.

This included granting full scholarships to third-year medical students and facilitating their transfer to other universities.
“Today, over 90% of those students have successfully graduated,” he noted.

Dr Adams added that Governor Bello also approved the construction of a state-of-the-art clinical complex at the university, which has since been completed and is in use.
Furthermore, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Marietu Tenuche, was tasked with initiating all required basic science and allied health programmes to support a comprehensive MBBS curriculum—an instruction that has since been fulfilled.

Continuing the progress, Governor Usman Ododo, upon assuming office, established a multi-purpose medical students’ teaching laboratory, lecture halls, a library, consultant offices, and student hostels to enhance teaching and learning conditions.
Dr Adams also highlighted other strategic investments in medical and health education across the state, including:
- The College of Nursing, Obangede
- The College of Health Sciences, Idah
- The College of Medical Sciences at CUSTECH, Osara
- And now, the fully restored College of Medical Sciences at PAAU, Anyigba
He concluded by expressing appreciation to all stakeholders who contributed to the successful re-accreditation and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to completing all ongoing infrastructure projects supporting the MBBS programme.
