NUJ Hails Gombe’s Support to Families of Deceased Journalists

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Gombe State Council, has commended Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya for his compassionate intervention, following the death of seven of its members in a tragic road accident.

The journalists lost their lives in a fatal motor accident on Monday, 29th December, 2025, while returning from the wedding ceremony of a colleague in Kaltungo Local Government Area of the state.

The Chairman of the NUJ Gombe State Council, Mr. Faruq Mu’azu Gombe, expressed the union’s deep appreciation to the Governor for the donation of ₦14 million to the families of the deceased members.

Mr. Mu’azu said in a statement that the financial assistance would ensure that each bereaved family would receive ₦2 million each from the Gombe State Government, to help offset burial and related expenses.

He said, “The gesture reflected the governor’s commitment to easing the burden of the painful loss on the affected families.”

Mr. Mu’azu described the governor’s response as swift, empathetic and invaluable during a very difficult period for the union.

The Gombe State Council of the NUJ also extended its appreciation to the National President of the union, Mr. Alhassan Yahaya Abdullahi, for his unwavering solidarity and steadfast presence throughout the period of mourning.

While lamenting the loss of lives in the accident, the council acknowledged that some members who survived the crash were still receiving medical treatment for various injuries.

He further thanked NUJ members from within and outside the state, who visited, sent delegations or messages of condolence to the state council and the families of the deceased.

The Chairman of the Gombe State NUJ also expressed gratitude to various groups, organisations, unions and individuals for their support, prayers and show of concern during the moment of grief.
