The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has entered into a strategic partnership with the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) to enhance journalists’ capacity in data protection and digital security.

The collaboration was formalised during a courtesy visit by the NUJ delegation, led by its Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike, to the Commission’s leadership in Abuja.

Speaking during the engagement, Comrade Ike said the visit was aimed at strengthening journalists’ understanding of data protection laws and reinforcing ethical standards in reporting.

“In today’s world, data is power. Data shapes narratives. Data drives governance. Data influences elections. Data can build trust, and it can also destroy reputations,” she said.

“As journalists, we operate at the intersection of information and public trust. Every day, we collect, process, interpret and publish data, and sometimes protect sensitive information.”

She noted that the digital environment is rapidly evolving, with rising cyber threats, increasingly sophisticated surveillance and the swift spread of misinformation.

“This is why our visit is strategic. We seek partnership, particularly in the area of capacity building and training for journalists within the FCT and beyond. Journalists must be conversant with Nigeria’s data protection laws and policies, equipped to handle personal and sensitive data responsibly, trained to prevent digital breaches and empowered to protect their devices, sources and newsroom systems,” Ike stated.

She stressed that journalists who lack knowledge of data protection are vulnerable, warning that such vulnerability could undermine democratic processes.

“The media must not only report on data protection compliance; we must embody it,” she added.

Comrade Ike further explained that the partnership would provide practical guidance on lawful data handling, expose journalists to digital security best practices and strengthen institutional resilience against cyber threats targeting media organisations.

Responding, the National Commissioner and Chief Executive Officer of the NDPC, Dr Vincent Olatunji, commended the FCT Council for the initiative, describing awareness creation as central to the Commission’s mandate.

He referenced recent engagements with journalists in Lagos and Abuja during National Privacy Week, noting that beyond promoting compliance with the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023, the media plays a critical role in deepening public understanding of data rights and responsibilities.

Dr Olatunji pledged to organise a one-day induction training for members of the NUJ FCT Council as part of the collaboration. He also assured continued institutional engagement to broaden awareness and strengthen Nigeria’s data protection framework.

He reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to sustained collaboration with the media to promote responsible data governance in the country.

The partnership underscores the shared resolve of both institutions to promote ethical journalism, strengthen data governance and enhance digital safety in Nigeria’s evolving information landscape, in line with the public service mandate of responsible broadcasting and national development.
