The member representing Ibarapa East State Constituency in the Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, has re-emerged as the Speaker of the 10th Assembly.

Ogundoyin, who was the Speaker of the 9th Assembly, was declared the winner after he was nominated for the post without any opposition, while the Deputy Speaker, Abiodun Fadeyi, was also re-elected.

The duo emerged at the inauguration of the Assembly at the Hallowed Chamber, Oyo State House of Assembly Complex, Agodi-Secretariat, Ibadan.

Ogundoyin, who first had his shot in the Assembly in 2018, following the death of the 8th assembly speaker, Micheal Adeyemo, also from Ibarapa East, was consequently elected in a bye-election as a member to complete the term of the late speaker and was duly elected into the 9th Assembly where he emerged the speaker at the age of 31.

Ogundoyin’s emergence for the second term as Speaker, making him the first in the history of the state Assembly to be so elected, followed the proclamation and inauguration of the 10th Assembly by Governor Seyi Makinde.

In his proclamation of the 10th Assembly, Governor Makinde described it as a momentous occasion that symbolises not just the continuity of the state’s democratic journey, but also the vital role of the legislative power in the system of governance.

He urged the Assembly members to work with the executive to prioritise education, infrastructural development, electricity supply and healthcare, among others, so as to deliver good governance to citizens of the state.

Makinde stated: “Mr Speaker Sir, honourable members of the House, as we inaugurate the 10th Assembly and share our visions for sustainable development under Omituntun 2.0, we remain firm in our resolve to continue to deliver good governance to our people to the glory of God and to benefit the good people of Oyo State. We believe you will work with us to achieve this goal.”

In his acceptance speech shortly after taking the oath of office as the Speaker of the 10th Oyo State House of Assembly, Ogundoyin promised to build on the enviable achievements of the 9th Assembly, appreciating the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, for believing in him and supporting him.

He also expressed gratitude to all his colleagues for the trust and confidence they reposed in him for the second time.

He said: “I am truly humbled by the trust and confidence you have placed in me and other elected principal officers of the House, and I assure you that we will work tirelessly to exceed the groundbreaking achievements of the 9th Oyo State House of Assembly.

Ogundoyin described his re-election as not only significant for him and his family but also momentous for the entire people of his constituency, assuring that the 10th Oyo State House of Assembly would build upon the foundation already laid by him and the leadership of the 9th Assembly and work with all stakeholders to place Oyo State House of Assembly on a higher pedestal.

He noted: “It is an epoch-making moment in the history of the legislature in Oyo State because this is the first time we are having a Speaker elected for two consecutive assemblies – uninterrupted.

“It is equally not on record that a lawmaker from my zone has become a Speaker of Oyo State House of Assembly on two occasions, let alone a Speaker for two consecutive assemblies. This unambiguously places a greater burden on me to deliver and to ensure that my name and that of other remaining 31 honorable members are written in gold at the end of this 10th Assembly,” the Speaker pledged.

Similarly, the member representing Ogbomoso South State Constituency, Sanjo Adedoyin, emerged the majority leader of the House.

The event was attended by Governor Seyi Makinde; Deputy Governor, Bayo Lawal; Chief of Staff, Segun Ogunwuyi; former Speaker of the Oyo Assembly, Senator Monsurat Sunmonu and the Head of Service, Olubunmi Oni, among other top
