Oracle, a U.S.-based IT firm, announced on Wednesday it will invest $8 billion in Japan over the next decade, aiming to meet the increasing demand for cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) in the country.

The Technology company also plans to enhance the capabilities of its data centres in Tokyo and Osaka by incorporating high-performance graphics processing units for AI development.

This initiative aims to assist the Japanese government and businesses in safeguarding their data within the country, minimizing the risk of it being compromised abroad.

The announcement follows similar investment plans recently revealed by its U.S. rivals. Tech giant Microsoft Corp. said earlier this month it will invest $2.9 billion in Japan to upgrade its data centres.

while Amazon.com Inc.’s cloud computing arm declared its intention to allocate approximately 2 trillion yen ($13 billion) in the country to strengthen its cloud infrastructure by 2027.

Prime Minister Fumio Kishida’s administration views AI as a key driver for Japan’s economic growth and has been actively promoting technological advancements in this field.
