Governor Ademola Adeleke has directed the Ministry of Works, the Osun State Emergency Management Agency (OSEMA) and other relevant agencies to swing into action with a view to alleviating the sufferings of those affected by the rainstorm that ravaged Osogbo, the capital city and its environs over the weekend.
The Governor in a press statement issued by his spokesperson, Mallam Olawale Rasheed, commiserated with the flood victims even as he described the incidents as sad and unfortunate.
“I must say that I feel deeply torched and alarmed by the incident and my administration, will, no doubt, put in place, everything morally and officially possible through OSEMA with a view to offsetting the attendant losses incurred by the victims in Osogbo and other communities affected by such unfortunate developments.
“I have also directed the Ministry of work to quickly swing into action by clearing the motor ways to prevent further accidents,” Adeleke said.
While blaming climate change for the increasing natural disasters, the governor urged residents to prioritise actions that can mitigate natural disasters such as tree planting among others, advising against indiscriminate felling of trees.
Meanwhile, the gubernatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, in the governorship election in Osun State, Mr Munirudeen Oyebamiji has felicitated Christians in the state on the occasion of 2026 Palm Sunday celebrations, just as he commiserated with the victims of the Saturday’s rainstorms.
He noted that Palm Sunday all over the world, signals the beginning of Holy Week, a sacred period of reflection, prayer, and renewal in the Christian calendar, as Christians prepare for Easter and gather in churches, waving palm branches in symbolic celebration of the triumphant entry of Jesus Christ into Jerusalem.
The APC gubernatorial candidate therefore expressed deepest sympathies with those whose properties and personal belongings were lost to the heavy rainstorms that destroyed properties and infrastructures in the state.
He acknowledged the inevitability of natural disasters and the need for responsible and responsive government to be alive to its responsibilities in addressing and combatting adverse effects of such occurrences on people’s lives and property.
Oyebamiji noted that at times like this, people’s strength lies in their unity and compassion for one another.
He then urged everyone to remain calm, stay safe, and support neighbors who may be in distress, especially the elderly, children, and the vulnerable.
ADC Candidate Commiserates
In the meantime, the Africa Democratic Congress, ADC gubernitorial candidate in Osun State, Dr. Najeem Salaam has also extended its concern and solidarity to residents of Osogbo who have been affected by the heavy downpour that caused disruptions across parts of the capital city.
He noticed that these are difficult moments, and expressed his empathy with families whose homes, properties, and livelihoods have been impacted.
Affected residents have accordingly called on the government to come to their aid and live up to their promises to alleviate their sufferings.
