WHO in a statement on its official website, lamented that conflict and climate crisis have affected healthcare and deepened threats around the world.

The global health organisation added that not less than five WHO regions are now impacted by worsening conflict and security, including the situations in Gaza, Sudan, and Ukraine.

It revealed plans to launch its Health Emergency Appeal 2024 where events would be live-streamed from the page.

It added that, the Health Emergency Appeal will support WHO in responding to ongoing and new emergencies around the world, including 15 Grade 3 emergencies.

The statement partly read, “The launch will highlight the specific needs, objectives, and priorities that the Health Emergency Appeal will help WHO meet in 2024 in countries and communities around the world.

“To carry on this important work and protect the health of the most vulnerable populations, WHO urgently needs the support of our donors and partners.

“The Health Emergency Appeal is the result of robust and rigorous plans targeting where funds can have the greatest impact, and with your support WHO will save lives, meet critical needs, and help communities emerge from crises better prepared for future threats.

“During the launch event, the priorities, challenges, and opportunities for health in emergency and humanitarian responses will be presented.”

The United Nations health agency also said almost 300 million people were in need of humanitarian assistance and protection in 2024.

A non-governmental organisation, Save the Children International, lamented the negative impact of climate change on girls in the north.

Interim Country Director, Save the Children International Nigeria, Faton Krasniqi, noted that one of the most violated rights of the girl-child is the obstacle to her learning, as the safe space to reach her full potential.

Climate change is an all-encompassing crisis, impacting the livelihoods, environment, health, safety, and education of communities.

Vulnerable communities, particularly girls and young women suffer its worst consequences.

According to Save the Children International, Climate change impacts can disproportionately affect girls and women who often bear the burden of caregiving and household responsibilities, adding that gender inequalities can perpetuate harmful practices like child marriage, limiting girls’ opportunities for education, development, and empowerment.
