Oyo Governor assents Bill Upgrading Education College to University

Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has assented to the bill seeking to upgrade the Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo, to a University of Education, renaming it the Emmanuel Alayande University of Education.
While speaking after signing the bill into law, at the Executive Council Chamber of the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Agodi, Ibadan, Makinde said the bill would increase access to quality university education in the state.
He maintained that tertiary institutions in the state had moved from receiving 25 percent of subvention to getting 100 percent of their subvention, as education is one of the four pillars of his administration called Omituntun 1.0, adding that his administration would remain focused on delivering good governance to the people.
Makinde stated that at inception, his administration had made various promises in education which were being fulfilled one after the other, expressing joy that the executive bill named the Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo, Law 2022, which had been sent to the House of Assembly had eventually been signed into law.
“This is another landmark event in the history of tertiary education in Oyo State. Of course, Education is one of the four pillars of the current administration which we called Omituntun 1.0. The Omituntun 2.0 that is coming is sustainable development.”
The Governor thanked the Oyo State House of Assembly for the speedy passage of the bill and also for working together because of the love they have for the people of the state, saying that in the history of Oyo State, theirs is one Assembly that it is very difficult to know who is majority and who is minority.
“Another thing we have seen here is the fact that all the arms in Oyo State are in harmony; from the Executive to the Legislative and to the Judiciary. We have all remained focused on delivering good governance to our people and this is why we are sure that the people we have served will reward us by voting in Omituntun 2.0.”
The Governor revealed that after his assent, the state would wait upon the National Universities Commission (NUC) to make a pronouncement on the Emmanuel Alayande College of Education to be known as Emmanuel Alayande University of Education.
“The University will then be empowered by law to award university degrees, diploma certificates and other academic titles and distinctions. This is another way we are increasing access to quality university education for the people of Oyo State. Our aspiration is to ensure that the Emmanuel Alayande University of Education becomes the best university of education in Nigeria.”
The Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Adebo Ogundoyin, who gave a brief history of the school, said the passage of the bill to upgrade the Emmanuel Alayande College of Education, Oyo, to a degree-awarding institution came to limelight on November 23rd, 2022, disclosing that the assent would increase the number of universities owned by the state to three.
Similarly, the Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Abdulrahman Abdulrahim, stated that upgrading the college to a university of education would help in producing competent and professional teachers in the state.
