The National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Kabiru Turaki, SAN, has urged the Federal Government to intensify efforts toward improving national security in light of recent incidents across the country.

Speaking at a media briefing, Turaki said the rising cases of kidnappings and attacks underscore the need for a comprehensive review of Nigeria’s security framework.

“It is the primary responsibility of every government to safeguard the lives and property of its citizens. Recent developments make it necessary to reassess and strengthen our security architecture,” he said.

He noted that governors, though designated as chief security officers of their states, do not have direct control over operational security agencies, an arrangement he suggested may require reconsideration.

Party Affairs

The PDP Chairman also provided updates on internal matters, expressing satisfaction with the progress made by the National Working Committee (NWC) since its inauguration in Ibadan.

He confirmed that the NWC had reviewed and approved the Osun State congresses for selecting ad hoc delegates, as well as the ongoing governorship primary, which he described as “orderly and transparent”.

Turaki also said the party had reviewed preparations for the forthcoming local government elections in Anambra State and expressed confidence in the readiness of the state chapter.

The NWC also received updates from the party’s legal team regarding court cases, particularly those involving the temporary closure of PDP offices, and noted that the party’s position remains strong.

Certificates of Expulsion

Turaki announced that the PDP has issued certificates of expulsion to 11 former members earlier removed by the National Convention in Ibadan. The certificates, he said, have been dispatched to the individuals concerned to ensure proper documentation and clarity for relevant institutions and the public.

The affected individuals include Nyesom Wike, Ayodele Fayose, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, Umaru Bature, Kamarudeen Ajibade (SAN), Kamaluddin Adeyemi Ajibadi (SAN), Abdurahman Muhammad, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, Austin Nwachukwu, Abraham Amah Nnanna, George Turna and Chief Dan Orbih.

Turaki explained that the decision was in line with the resolutions of the party’s highest decision-making body and was aimed at ensuring administrative clarity, especially regarding party membership records.

Repositioned For 2027

The Chairman said the PDP is focused on strengthening its internal structures and preparing to play its role as the leading opposition party, to present a credible alternative to Nigerians in 2027.

“Our party remains rooted in the people. Even when individuals leave, the support base remains strong,” he said.

Responding to questions on the Osun governorship primary, Turaki clarified that the NWC has the constitutional mandate to conduct, postpone, or cancel primaries and confirmed that the exercise was ongoing.

He said the party has not received official communication regarding Governor Ademola Adeleke’s purported resignation and will respond appropriately if such communication is received.

He also noted that the party has yet to be formally notified about the nomination of some former governors for ambassadorial roles and will consider the matter when officially informed.
