The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared its readiness to reclaim political power in 2027, promising a return to what it described as Nigeria’s “glorious years” under PDP governance.
National Chairman of the party, Tanimu Turaki (SAN), made the declaration in Abuja while addressing a joint meeting of members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and the forum of former PDP governors and ministers.
Turaki commended members of the newly inaugurated NWC for what he described as notable achievements within one month of assuming office, stressing that the meeting was deliberately convened to draw lessons from past PDP leaders who presided over the party’s 16 years in power.
According to him, PDP’s legacy at both the state and federal levels remains visible across the country, despite what he termed sustained efforts to discredit the party and its leaders.
“When we talk about the 16 glorious years of the PDP, we are talking about enduring projects and policies implemented by our former governors and ministers, legacies that are still standing tall today,” Turaki said.
He noted that under PDP leadership, Nigeria experienced economic growth, exited debt burdens, built critical infrastructure and strengthened institutions that continue to support governance, project execution and the fight against corruption.
The PDP chairman said the party’s renewed push to return to power must begin with reconnecting with Nigerians and returning to the party’s foundational values.
“If we are serious about bringing back those glorious years, we must go back to the basics. PDP belongs to Nigerians. They are the owners of this party,” he said.
Turaki emphasized that the engagement with former governors and ministers was strategic, aimed at understanding what distinguished PDP’s leadership, sustained public trust and made the party a household name.
He assured Nigerians that the rebranded PDP would prioritize transparency, equity, fairness and justice, adding that the party is open to guidance and constructive criticism.
“This will be a frank family meeting. Mistakes were made, and we admit them. What matters is that we are ready to correct those mistakes. This is a new PDP,” he said, assuring Nigerians that the party was “back for good.”
Former Governors, Ministers Pledge Support
Speaking on behalf of former PDP governors, former Niger State Governor, Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, commended Turaki’s leadership and resilience, assuring him of total support in rebuilding the party.
Aliyu said true leadership is rooted in service and respect for the people, not titles or personal acclaim.
“People may forget the infrastructure you built, but they never forget how you made them feel. If the people were happy during your tenure, they will always remember,” he said.
He stressed the need for the PDP to restore public trust ahead of 2027 by promoting credible, honest and committed leadership, urging party members not to be discouraged by challenges.
“PDP will not die. We will continue to sacrifice, remain disciplined and follow due process,” Aliyu declared.
Shekarau Lauds NWC’s Courage
Also speaking, former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, praised the Turaki-led NWC for what he described as courage, commitment and decisive leadership within a short period.
Shekarau recalled how the party leadership defied intimidation to reclaim its national headquarters, describing the moment as symbolic of PDP’s resilience.
“Within four to five weeks, the chairman has done far more than we expected. Nigerians are already saying, ‘please return us to where you took over from us,” he said.
He expressed confidence that PDP’s unity and determination would be key to its success in 2027, adding that former ministers and party leaders remain committed to supporting the party’s revival.
“It is not about numbers, but courage, commitment and determination. We are ready to join hands to move PDP forward,” Shekarau said.
The meeting ended with a renewed pledge by party leaders to strengthen internal unity, reconnect with Nigerians and reposition the PDP as a credible alternative ahead of the 2027 general elections.
