The Plateau State Commissioner for Health, Dr Nicholas Baamlong, has announced the revitalisation of 80 Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) by the State Government as part of efforts to address the high rates of maternal and child morbidity and mortality.

Dr Baamlong disclosed this during a news briefing in Jos on Monday to mark this year’s World Health Day, themed: “Healthy Beginnings, Hopeful Futures”.

He expressed concern over the state’s maternal mortality ratio, which stands at an estimated 900 deaths per 100,000 live births, alongside 80 neonatal deaths per 1,000 newborns.

The commissioner stated that the government also plans to provide accommodation for skilled birth attendants at PHCs while working to enhance the state’s health indices.

He emphasised the necessity for governments to invest in impactful maternal and newborn health services, expand equitable access to quality healthcare, particularly in remote areas, and prioritise improving health outcomes.

Dr Baamlong highlighted the importance of tackling the underlying social and economic drivers of inequality, as well as fostering accountability, coordination, and innovation at all levels to achieve global maternal survival targets by 2030.

He extended his gratitude to Governor Caleb Mutfwang for his role in advancing healthcare quality within the state.

Dr Baamlong also appreciated developmental partners in the health sector for their efforts in reducing maternal and child morbidity and mortality in Plateau State.
