The Poultry Association of Nigeria (PAN) has decried the rising cost of poultry feeds and consumables, saying it was diminishing their profit, and at the same time making many farmers quit the business.

Specifically, the Secretary of the Plateau State chapter of the association, Mrs Nanji Gambo, stated this on Tuesday, during an interview with newsmen in Jos.

She noted that the current high cost of feeds has cost the association its members as they were operating at a loss.

“These farmers could not bear the high cost of feed and so they crashed out of their businesses,” said Gambo.

She revealed that the association had formed several platforms to talk with farmers to encourage them to wait patiently for government intervention.

Meanwhile, Gambo urged the government to allow some stakeholders to import maize and soya beans to reduce the pressure on local production that is inadequate, stressing that the high cost of input was a major setback for poultry farmers.

Also, she called on the government to encourage and step-up local production of maize and soya, which are major ingredients for feed production.
