The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has announced a reduction in electricity generation on the National Grid, attributing the development to gas supply constraints caused by an incident of pipeline vandalisation within the upstream gas network.
In a statement signed and released by NISO Management, the incident disrupted gas availability to several gas-fired power plants, leading to significantly reduced output from affected facilities.
The system Operator explained that as gas-fired stations account for a substantial portion of Nigeria’s electricity generation, the shortfall translated into a noticeable drop in total available generation capacity on the National Grid.
It said; “NISO activated a range of contingency measures aimed at preserving grid stability and reliability.
“These measures included increased dispatch from available hydroelectric power stations, continuous re-dispatch of generation resources, voltage control interventions, and other operational adjustments designed to balance electricity supply with prevailing system demand.”
The system operator stated that it is closely monitoring grid conditions, with particular attention to system frequency and voltage profiles, while collaborating with relevant stakeholders to mitigate the impact of the gas supply disruption.
NISO noted that the incident underscored the critical importance of coordinated efforts to safeguard gas infrastructure, especially as the country approaches the festive season a period traditionally associated with heightened sensitivity in grid operations.
Despite the challenges, NISO reassured electricity consumers of its commitment to proactive grid management and strict adherence to operational standards.
The operator emphasised that all necessary actions are being taken to ensure the continued security, stability, and reliability of electricity supply across the country.
