President Buhari meets with new Service Chiefs

President Muhammadu Buhari has met with the newly appointed Service Chiefs at the Council Chambers of the Presidential Villa in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory.

President Buhari, during the meeting, directed the newly appointed Chief of Defence Staff and Service Chiefs to do everything possible to improve the security situation in the country.

Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Lucky Irabor disclosed this to State House Correspondents soon after they met behind closed doors on Wednesday evening.

Irabor, who spoke on behalf of the Service Chiefs, pledged that they will not relent but will do their best to achieve their mandate.

He said: “The message from the President is that we, knowing the current security environment must do everything possible to add value to the security disposition and the expectations are high and that we are quite mindful of those expectations. So, we collectively will work to achieve that.”

He stressed that they are mindful of what Nigerians expect from them and they will not disappoint the citizens of the country.

“We have just seen Mr. President and we are mindful of the demands, we can only at this stage pledge our ultimate best to bring safety and security to lives and properties across the country.

“On behalf of the service chiefs, I am assuring the nation of peace and security, we believe there will be value that will be added to the security disposition of the nation,” he said.

Also speaking, Minister of Defence, Retired Major General Bashir Magashi said the President pledged to give the necessary support to the new Service Chiefs, to enable them to achieve their goal.

“The President said these new Service Chiefs should have no other commitment but to see the end of this insurgency, banditry and other forms of criminality.

“He said he is fully prepared to give them the necessary support to enable them to perform the job effectively. He urged them to take the welfare of their officers and men serious so that they will be encouraged to do the needful for this country,” Magashi stated.

The Defence Minister also said the President urged the new men at the helm of affairs in the Armed Forces to carefully select their heads of operations that are courageous and patriotic, in order to successfully bring to an end, the war against insurgents and terrorists.
