President, Paul Biya has held his first campaign rally on Tuesday in Maroua, Cameroon’s Far North Region, ahead of the October 12 Presidential election, in which he is seeking an eighth term.

Addressing supporters, the oldest sitting head of state in Africa, promised to strengthen security in the region, tackle youth unemployment, and improve road infrastructure and social amenities if reelected.

My goal, my fellow citizens, is for every young person, wherever they may be, to have opportunities that enable them to easily find a job or become an entrepreneur,” Biya said.

The Far North Region, a predominantly Muslim and economically disadvantaged area, has been affected by attacks and kidnappings by the extremist group Boko Haram. It accounts for nearly 20 percent of Cameroon’s 8.2 million registered voters.

Two opposition candidates, Bello Bouba Maigari and Issa Tchiroma Bakary, both former allies of Biya, have significant support in the region.

Biya’s appearance in Maroua marked his first public campaign event after a weeklong stay in Switzerland. No official reason was given for the trip, though he has frequently travelled to Europe for private and medical purposes in recent years.

Critics have questioned Biya’s ability to govern due to his age, but he remains a strong contender, particularly after his main rival, Maurice Kamto, was barred from contesting in August. The opposition remains divided.

Cameroon’s past elections have often faced credibility concerns, with authorities accused of favouring the incumbent. A constitutional amendment in 2008 removed the two-term presidential limit.
