President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has accepted the resignation of Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, who stepped down from his position with immediate effect, citing health concerns.

A statement issued on Monday by the Presidential Spokesperson, Mr Bayo Onanuga, disclosed that the former minister tendered his resignation in a letter dated December 1, addressed to the President.

The statement further revealed that President Tinubu, while acknowledging Badaru’s decision, expressed gratitude for his service to the nation.

The President is expected to communicate Badaru’s replacement to the Senate later this week as consultations continue.

Badaru Abubakar, 63, served as a two-term governor of Jigawa State between 2015 and 2023 before being appointed Minister of Defence on August 21, 2023.

The former ministers’ exit comes at a time President Tinubu declared a national security emergency, with further details on the scope of the policy expected soon.
