President Tinubu Establishes National Health Fellows Programme In 774LGs

Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the establishment of the National Health Fellows Programme, with young Nigerian fellows to be engaged in all the 774 local government areas in the country.

The President’s approval to the Health Initiative was made known on Monday in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale.

 

Ngelale stated that President Tinubu who is the African Union Champion for Human Resources in Healthcare, places faith in young Nigerians, and expects that their engagement in the nation-building task, which includes a daily monitoring and tracking of health reforms in their locations, will introduce a new era of world-class service provision to Nigerians in every part of the country.

 

The Presidential aide added that the
fellows will serve as fiduciary agents to monitor and track Primary Healthcare Centre development and performance, which is to be prudently measured against all financial inflows to the centres nationwide.

 

Ngelale further disclosed that the fellowship programme will be domiciled in the Sector Wide Approach (SWAp) coordination office under the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

 

He also stated that the fellows will be recruited, renumerated, and equipped with appropriate tools to track the performance of Basic Health Care Provision Fund-supported health facilities nationwide.

 

In his his determination to comprehensively upgrade existing primary Healthcare centres and construct over 8,800 new primary healthcare centres across all local government areas in the country for accessible and qualitative healthcare delivery with the provision of new social accountability mechanisms”.
 

 

Recall that December 12th, 2023 ,
President Bola Tinubu declared his administration’s determination to improve Nigeria’s health sector through massive investments and the allocation of increased funds to the sector in the 2024 appropriation act.

 

The Nigerian Leader also noted the importance of primary healthcare in building a resilient, integrated healthcare system.

 

President Tinubu announced plans for a comprehensive revamp of physical infrastructure, equipment, and the re-training of frontline health workers starting from 2024.
