President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has praised Ambassador Dele Cole’s impact on Nigeria’s media and diplomatic sectors, describing him as a towering figure whose legacy shaped national discourse and elevated the country’s standing abroad.

In a message commemorating Cole’s 85th birthday, President Tinubu highlighted his tenure as Managing Director of the Daily Times in 1976, during which the publication became one of Africa’s most respected newspapers.

“Your extraordinary contributions to our nation’s newspaper industry, particularly your transformative leadership as Managing Director of the Daily Times in 1976, remain unparalleled,” President Tinubu wrote.

He commended the veteran journalist’s editorial vision, crediting him with strengthening journalistic integrity and public enlightenment through bold, intellectually grounded commentary.

“You defended truth and elevated our national discourse with a fearless pen and a principled voice,” he stated.

Beyond journalism, President Tinubu acknowledged Cole’s diplomatic service as Nigeria’s Ambassador to Brazil and Argentina, and his role as Special Adviser on International Relations.

“Your service abroad brought honour to Nigeria and helped build critical bridges at a time our international relationships were evolving,” President Tinubu noted.

The President concluded his message by wishing Ambassador Cole continued health and strength, calling him “a symbol of excellence, courage, and public service.”
