Rainy Season: Petroleum tanker drivers call for rehabilitation of roads
By Isma’il Umar, Sokoto
The Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union has called on the Nigerian Government to redouble efforts and continue to rehabilitate major roads before the commencement of rainy season across the country.
Zonal Chairman of the union, Kaduna Branch Mr. Abdulsalam Mohammed, made the plea at a Zonal meeting held in Sokoto State.
According to him, condition of roads in the country usually makes it difficult to transport petroleum products to different destinations during the season.
“Condition of roads in Nigeria make it hard to our members to carry out their work effectively. The situation of the roads causes security threats and claims many lives of our members. Federal government should complete the ongoing roads projects and rehabilitate dilapidated ones for overall safety of drivers across the country,” Comrade Mohammed said.
He also called on members to desist from night and reckless driving and not to load products from non-government approved loading points.
He added that any member found wanting would face full wrath of the union’s law.
Mohammed applauded the National Chairman of the union, Comrade Lucky Osesua, for good leadership, transparency and timely intervention to members’ activities.
In his remarks, the Chairman, Gusau Unit of the Union, Comrade Shu’aibu Muhammad, said the meeting was convened to further strengthen recorded achievement and address some areas of weaknesses.
He also commended the support and contribution of Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal for providing adequate parking space and other interventions for petroleum drivers in the state.
He also acknowledged the contribution of security agencies and other relevant stakeholders towards their support to the union.
Comrade Shu’aibu Muhammad said Gusau Unit under his watch has recorded some notable achievement through office renovation, provision of vehicles, construction of Borehole, new office, toilet among others.
The Gusau Unit Chairman assured to continue to implement meaningful policies and programmes that would uplift standard of members across the country.
The meeting was attended by Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corp, (NSCDC), Federal Roads Safety Corp, (FRSC), Department of Security Service among others.
