The House of Representatives says it will continue to address the challenges militating against the advancement of Nigerian women in all spheres of human endeavor.
Speaker Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, made the remark at the International Women’s Day celebration organized by the Commonwealth Women Parliamentary Association, Africa region at the National Assembly in Abuja.
The Speaker stated that the House would use every instrument of legislation available to advance the cause of equality and justice for all Nigerian women.
He said “I assure you that this 9th House of Representatives will continue to take actions to address the challenges militating against the advancement of women in all spheres of human endeavor.
I ask all of you here today to support the House in this regard so that together we can make the world a better place for all our mothers, sisters, daughters, friends and colleagues.
This is part of our Legislative Agenda, and we must at the end of it be able to tick that box that we said we would; we have this contract with Nigerians and we did.”
The Chairperson, Commonwealth Women Parliamentarians, African Region, Dr. Zainab Gimba, said the event was dedicated to highlight gender based issues with focus on gender discrimination.
Dr. Gimba described denying African women opportunities as denying the continent valuable contributions to its development observed that the rise of women is not about displacement of men but a call to give equal opportunity to women to play their complimentary role in a gender balanced world.
“To achieve this goal, we must take conscious steps to ensure women’s involvement in every sphere of the decision-making process to usher in an inclusive development.” She said.
On his part, the Clerk to the National Assembly (CNA), Arc. Ojo Amos Olatunde, tasked women parliamentarians in the National Assembly to rise to the occasion to drastically reduce domestic violence against women in Nigeria.
This year’s theme #Choose To Challenge; is also a call to celebrate the social economic, cultural, and political achievements of women all over the world.
