The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has stressed the importance of the deployment of digital technology in developing and improving revenue generation in Nigeria.

Mrs Angel Fadahunsi, Director, Department of Career and Skill Development, FIRS, disclosed this on Friday in Abuja during a capacity workshop highlighting the importance of digital technology in improving tax collection.

The workshop, organized by FIRS and the Society of Women in Taxation (SWIT), was themed “Expanding the Frontiers of Revenue Generation Through Digitalization: the FIRS Experience.”

“There are key skills and technologies that we must master to make this happen: archival systems, robotic process automation, effective virtual communication, strategic planning, data management and more.

We recently inaugurated a tax administration software called TaxProMax which has been 100 percent developed by our staff, as such, staff must have exposure, skill and experience to do the project.

“This is why we at the FIRS career and skill department, have focused our energies on building these technological skills in our staff over the years and will indeed focus more on this in future,” said Fadahunsi.

She highlighted the necessity of digital skills towards financial technology, as businesses take more services online, adding that people needed to be trained to acquire the critical skills that would improve revenue generation.

Mr Adesina Adedayo, President, Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITIN) at the event stated that the FIRS’ introduction of various ICT initiatives to drive revenue generation, notable among which is the TaxProMax to improve revenue generation, is commendable and should be supported.

Meanwhile, it would be recalled that earlier the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) revealed that it generated revenue of N4.2 trillion between January and September 2021.

The Executive Chairman of FIRS, Mr Mohammad Nami, said the feat was achieved as a result of the efficiency and effectiveness of the newly introduced in-house ex-service solution (TaxPro Max) and intelligence/data gathered, mined and analyzed in the period under review.
