The Nasarawa State Government has expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance by members of the public during the July sanitation exercise.

The Commissioner of Environment and Natural Resources, Mr. Yakubu Kwanta, gave the commendation while addressing journalists after the sanitation exercise on Saturday in Lafia.

The Commissioner who spoke through the Chief Environment Officer in the ministry, Abubakar Mohammed, described the level of compliance as impressive compared to previous sanitation exercises.

He also commended house and shop owners for clearing drainages around their environments which was the reason that flooding is less in the state this year.

Yakubu said that the government had strengthened the capacity of the inspectors in all the 13 Local Government Areas for more efficiency.

He called on members of the public to always keep their environment clean to guard against the outbreak of all diseases.

Residents should cooperate more with the government towards ensuring that the state is clean in their best interest.

“If the environment is clean, it will guard against a possible outbreak of any disease, thereby ensuring improved healthy living of the people,’’ the commissioner said.

The commissioner said Nasarawa state would sustain its status of cleanliness, as the government has set aside last Saturday of every month for sanitation exercises.

Meanwhile, 10 persons suspected to have violated environmental sanitation laws in Lafia were arrested and prosecuted.
