The Social Democratic Party, SDP, has condemned the attack on worshippers at St. Francis Catholic Church in Owo, Ondo State, on Sunday, June 5, 2022.

In a press statement signed by the National Publicity Secretary of SDP, Mr. Rufus Aiyenigba, he described the mass killings as a heinous crime against the Nigerian state and humanity.

“The massacre and gory bloodbath is a further addition to the unabating woes and national tragedies that have become the defining feature of our national life, particularly in the last seven years.” he said

Mr. Aiyenigba added that “the citizenry is presently in deep despair and a state of despondency as the whole national landscape is daily turning into a killing field and the country becoming a conquered territory.”

The party said that more is required than what is presently obtained in tackling the insecurity situation of the nation.

The SDP expresses deep condolences to the families that have lost loved ones in the attack.

The party commends the Nigerian military forces for their sacrifices to ensure that citizens are safe. However, the party calls on security agencies to do more to end all forms of crime in the country.

Mr. Aiyenigba also said the nation is bleeding and needs urgent intervention. “Nigeria’s President should do more to give hope to Nigerians and make them feel safe in their communities at the very least, even as they are faced with increasing economic challenges.

The SDP has encouraged Nigerians to keep the faith as there is hope in sight as the party is getting prepared to salvage the situation in the country.
