The Nigerian Senate on Wednesday confirmed the appointment of Mr. Abdulrasheed Bawa as chairman of the Economic & Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Mr. Bawa’s confirmation was sequel to his screening by the senate in plenary before the eventual confirmation by a voice vote of the majority.

The forty year old Bawa hails from Kebbi state in north west region of Nigeria.

Speaking on his vision as the Executive chairman of the EFCC, Mr. Bawa assured Nigerians that the EFCC under his watch will focus on promoting good governance by building the capacity of various institutions & not fighting corrupt individuals.

He also offered clarification on the reported sales of recovered assets while he was the zonal head of the Commission in the oil rich Port Harcourt.

Anybody who understands how the EFCC works, will know that sale of assets or things of that nature are not done by operatives of the commission. It is only the Secretary of the commission that is empowered by Law to carry out such function.

“So in answering that question by Senator Aliero, i want to confirm to Nigerians that i did not sell any assets whatsoever while i was zonal head of the EFCC and i never did.”

In his remarks, President of the senate Ahmad Lawan while congratulating the new EFCC chairman, urged him to do his best in ensuring that the anti graft agency is truly repositioned to curb corruption in the country.
