The Independent Investigative Panel set up by the National Human Rights Commission sitting in Abuja, Nigeria’s Capital has ordered the Nigerian Police to ascertain and report back to the panel whether or not Sergeant David Ilemuda is being prosecuted before a court of competent jurisdiction.

This followed a petition by Mr. Adewale Adegbite  seeking the intervention of the panel to compel the Nigerian Police to compensate him for allegedly killing his son extra-judiciously.

It would be recalled that the Panel was set up to investigate rights violations allegedly committed by the defunct Anti-Robbery Squad, SARS and other units of the Police.

In the petition, Mr. Adewale stated that when the incidence happened in Nasarawa State, the case was referred to the Attorney General and commissioner of Justice in state who ordered for the prosecution of Sergeant  Ilemuda for culpable homicide after a thorough investigation was concluded.

According to Mr. Adewale, Sergeant  David  was not convicted by the court due to lack of evidence hence the reason he approached the panel to seek Justice.

Chairman of the Panel, Retired Justice Sulaiman Galadima  also assured Mr Adewale that his prayers before the panel are duly noted and adjourned to March 19, 2021 for the Police to report its finding to the Panel.
