The Sokoto State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has organised a one-day road walk sensitisation campaign to raise public awareness about the dangers of illicit drug use.

The event, held in commemoration of the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, was aimed at fostering a drug-free society through advocacy and community engagement.

Speaking to journalists after the walk, Commandant Adamu Mohammed, Head of the NDLEA in Sokoto State, explained that the United Nations designates 26th June every year to draw global attention to the impact of drug abuse on individuals, families, and communities.

He said this year’s theme, “EVIDENCE IS CLEAR; Invest in PREVENTION – Break the Cycle,” underscores the need to prioritise prevention measures across Nigeria.

“This year’s theme focuses on prevention by integrating drug education into school curricula, encouraging stronger parental involvement, and building community-based strategies to tackle drug abuse nationwide,” he stated.

  • 97 individuals were arrested in connection with these seizures
  • 22 convictions were successfully secured
  • 63 clients were counselled and rehabilitated at the NDLEA rehabilitation centre in Sokoto

He commended the Sokoto State Government, led by Governor Ahmed Aliyu, for its unwavering support and cooperation, which has contributed significantly to the agency’s operations.

National and Community-Level Collaboration

Mohammed also expressed appreciation to NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd.), for his leadership and continuous support to the state commands across the country.

“We remain committed to partnering with sister security agencies and all stakeholders in the fight against drug abuse and illicit trafficking,” he said.

He emphasised the need to promote a culture of awareness, inclusivity, and empathy while tackling the stigma and discrimination often faced by individuals suffering from substance use disorders.

Mohammed further praised Mr Faisal Abdullateef, Manager of Pop Cola Nigeria, and his staff for actively participating in the rally and supporting NDLEA’s advocacy efforts in Sokoto.
