STI EXPO: SHESTCO Reiterates Commitment To Advancing Technological Capabilities

The Director General of the Sheda Science and Technology Complex SHESTCO Prof. Paul Onyenekwe has reiterated the agency’s commitment in advancing technological capabilities for the socio-economic development of Nigeria.

The DG made the commitment during the SHESTCO day at the ongoing Science Technology and Innovation Expo 2024 in Abuja Nigeria’s capital.

Prof Onyenekwe explained that SHESTCO conducts research and development activities involving cutting-edge technologies to strengthen the country’s technological base.

He highlighted the agency’s research activities in the areas of agriculture and its machineries, laboratory test kits and drugs, production of innovative products like recyclable and biodegradable polymers, lead-carbon batteries, solar cells amongst others.

“We produce a type of car battery that is different from the common one that is bringing out copper from the head. We have produced a new one that does not do that. We have been able to remove that using activated carbon which is added to the system.” he said

“Again, one other thing we have also produced within this period is malaria parasite detector. The essence of this is that it can be done anywhere. When You have a kind of slide, take a blood sample and put on it and then take a picture of it, That’s it. We also believe that this particular detector can be upgraded such that it can be used for other parasites and any other thing that has to do with blood.” he added.

Prof Onyenekwe insisted that SHESTCO is particular about improving its research activities hence they take feedbacks very important and effects the observations made about their research.

“One of the things we exhibited in the last expo was Acha de-stoning machine, during the process, we had comments from people, and we went home and redesign it and now we have a modified one which is automated.”
