The South East Development Commission (SEDC) and the Enugu State Government have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to launch the South East Agro Development Programme.
The initiative is designed to boost agricultural productivity, attract private investment, strengthen food security, and drive economic growth across the South-East region.
SEDC said the programme will be judged by the investments, jobs, and community benefits it delivers.
According to SEDC, the initiative will be rolled out across all five South-East states to build an integrated agro-industrial ecosystem and unlock the region’s agricultural potential.
Enugu Reaffirms Commitment
The Secretary to the Enugu State Government, Prof. Chidiebere Onyia, said the project aligns with Governor Peter Mbah’s vision of treating agriculture as a business. He added that the state will provide policy support and ensure host communities benefit.
The programme is based on land mapping, field verification, and suitability assessments carried out by SEDC and the Enugu State Ministry of Agriculture.
Stakeholders to Benefit
SEDC said the project will involve development partners, financial institutions, research bodies, universities, and the private sector. Support is also expected from institutions such as the Bank of Industry. The initiative is expected to create jobs and entrepreneurship opportunities for young people.
SEDC will next partner with Abia State, while technical mapping is already underway in Ebonyi as the programme expands across the region.
Both parties pledged transparency, collaboration, and measurable results for sustainable agricultural development.
