Subsidy Removal: Transport Ministry to Procure Electric Vehicles

The Nigerian Minister of Transportation, Mr. Sai’du Alkali, says to cushion the effects of fuel subsidy removal, government will procure electric vehicles to reduce the high cost of transportation in the country.

The Minister stated this while assuming office at the Federal Ministry of Transportation headquarters in Abuja.

He added that in line with the “renewed hope” agenda of the present administration, he will ensure that mass transit is effective.

“I’m going to ensure that the mass transit system is effective and put in place. The agenda of Mr. President is renewed hope to make sure with the removal of fuel subsidy we have an effective mass transit system not only mass transit system, we see how we can procure electric vehicles to reduce cost of transportation,” Alkali said.

Mr. Alkali said under his supervision, the ministry will ensure the realization of its mandate and mandates of agencies under its jurisdiction.

He added that it will ensure an efficient transport system consistent with the socio-economic objectives of the constitution.

The transportation minister said “the ministry must assume a leading role of improving the public transportation sector to support the numerous policies that are geared towards providing democratic dividends that are accessible to ordinary Nigerians through effective provision of public transportation that is secured, affordable and convenient across the country.”

Mr. Alkali said he will ensure effective supervision, monitoring and evaluation of performance of all departments of the ministry and its agencies to meet operational standard, judicious expenditure management and optimal productivity.

“I will ensure sustainable collaboration with related ministries, agencies and corporate entities to reactivate the road transport and mass transit operation in the country.”

He noted that “I will carefully study prevailing economic trends and undertake the provision, modernization, rehabilitation, planning and development of rail transport sector with efficient security service to support the realization of primary purpose of government.”
