Super Eagles Coach To Know Fate Next Week – Sports Minister
The Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Sunday Dare, said Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr will know his fate next week, after the unconvincing display in the 1-1 draw against Cape Verde in their Qatar 2022 World Cup qualifier.
Rohr’s defensive tactics against Cape Verde, a team ranked 40 places below Nigeria in the FIFA rankings, renewed calls for the sacking of the German who has been in charge of the Super Eagles since August 2016. The Super Eagles, however, qualified from the Group that included Central African Republic and Liberia.
Speaking at the Ministerial press briefing anchored by the presidential media team at the State House in Abuja, Dare said his ministry was poised to adhere to due process on matters concerning the national team and their coaching staff before actions are taken.
The Minister said his ministry will await the report from the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF), on the performance of the team in the recent matches, review it, among others before taking the necessary action.
Dare was asked to confirm whether the national team coach had been relieved of his job or asked to resign.
While noting that he could not speak much on the matter, Dare assured that the NFF report will be ready by next week, adding the ministry will equally act based on its content made available.
The Sports Minister assured that the Super Eagles will qualify for Qatar 2022 as everything was being done by the authorities to ensure qualification.
While debates over the German’s future continue, fans are eagerly waiting to know Nigeria’s foes in the next round of qualifiers set to take place in March 2022.
