Supplementary Election: INEC Confirms Peaceful Voting in Ebonyi State

The Independent National Electoral Commission INEC in Ebonyi State Southeast Nigeria has confirmed that the ongoing supplementary election of some State and National Assembly positions in the State is peaceful.

The Resident Electoral Commissioner REC in the State, Mrs Onyeka Ugochi disclosed this in an interview with Journalists in Abakaliki the State capital.

Mrs Ugochi said she has been moving around the affected areas where the supplementary election is being held.

“So far, it has been smooth and security agencies are doing well to ensure adequate peace in all the polling units”.

The Presiding Officer at Igweorie open space polling unit number 001 at Azugwu Azumini ward, Mr Ewogu Micheal said the turnout of voters is quite encouraging.

“As you can see, these numbers of voters have been accredited and have voted as well, we are still waiting for those who are still coming so that as soon as the voting time elapses, we shall start sorting and counting“. Ewogu added.

On his part, the House of Assembly candidate for Abakaliki North State constituency, Mr Maxwell Umahi said the election has been peaceful and orderly.

Umahi commended both INEC and security agencies but urged them not to compromise.

The State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr Charles Akpenika expressed joy over the peaceful conduct of the ongoing supplementary election.

Accusations of vote buying

Meanwhile, the candidate of the People’s Democratic Party PDP, Mr Victor Nwoke alleged. the election was characterized by vote buying by the ruling APC.

Nwoke also alleged that his Party agent at Igweorie polling unit, Mr Ohidi Ndigwe was chased out of the unit and arrested as well.

Also, the candidate of the All Progressive Grand Alliance APGA, for Abakaliki North State constituency, Mr Ehiri Kelechi equally supported what Nwoke said.

One of the voters, Mr Nkwuda Uchenna said it has been smooth.

It would be recalled that INEC declared the results of some polling units in the affected seven local Government Areas of the State inconclusive during the last Presidential/National Assembly and Governorship/State Assembly elections.
