TAMPAN Suspends Yomi Fabiyi Over Movie ‘Oko Iyabo’
The Theater Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners’ Association (TAMPAN) has suspended Yomi Fabiyi over his controversial movie, ‘Oko Iyabo’ which he recently released
The association disclosed this on Friday in a statement explaining Yomi Fabiyi was indefinitely suspended for gross professional misconducts & unethical practices.
Daily Gist reports part of the statement read; “Having listened to the detailed defense of Mr. Yomi Fabiyi, who is the Producer/Director of the Controversial film “OKO IYABO” and his Co-Director Mr. Dele Matti, the Ethic, Conflict and Resolution Committee hereby found them guilty of professional misconduct and unethical practices.”
“Although Mr. Yomi Fabiyi insisted that it is his fundamental human right to use his creative talent to produce films that will tell his own account of the trending issue but his Co-Director admitted his fault and regretted his involvement in the film.”
TAMPAN pointed out that except “the work of art is a ‘Cinema Verite’, no one is allowed to use real name(s) of other person(s) in a feature film. Therefore, it is professional misconduct to use real name(s), stories and factual events of person(s) without their consent not to talk of a plot that is denigrating to that person.”
“That the story, plot, theme, title, dialogue, names and general content of the film ‘Oko Iyabo’ is a factual presentation that may give rise to prejudice since the matter is already In court.”
‘Oko Iyabo’ since its release, has sparked a lot of controversies, edging from child molestation to mockery of an ongoing court trial.
His misconducts and unethical practices have impacted negatively on the image and reputation of our association. His Co-Director Mr. Dele Matti having shown remorse and admitted his guilt is hereby suspended for 3months.
DAILY GIST had earlier reported how the newly debuted controversial movie, ‘Oko Iyabo’ received serious criticisms and backlashes from social media users. It was also reported that one of the scenes in the movie was an exact recreation of the viral CCTV video footage that landed Baba Ijesha in serious trouble.
The Nollywood actor, Yomi Fabiyi who has solely been one of the few who has supported Baba Ijesha amidst the rape saga decided to make a movie titled “Oko Iyabo” which is said to be a direct replicate of the incident that is presently happening. The title of the movie alone suggested that Yomi Fabiyi‘s intention maybe to bully Iyabo Ojo.
Yomi Fabiyi, on Sunday, July 4th announced on his Instagram that the movie, which he shared excerpts from it is out.
Recall that Yomi Fabiyi, had promised to release a movie based on the rape allegation levelled against his embattled colleague and close friend, Omiyinka Olanrewaju (Baba Ijesha).
The actor had earlier revealed that the film which would give an insight into the circumstances surrounding Omiyinka Olanrewaju’s (Baba Ijesha) alleged rape mess. The film, directed by Dele Matti, featured several Yoruba movie stars including Antar Laniyan, Lateef Adedimeji, Adewale Elesho and Lola Idije.
In the said movie, Yomi Fabiyi made use of real names of those involved in Olanrewaju Omiyinka’s case (Baba Ijesha-the accused, Princess- the foster mother and Iyabo Ojo- the whistleblower).
He is also reportedly making it look like the minor was having an affair with Baba Ijesha who is now facing trial for child molestation and sexual abuse. Baba Ijesha was also portrayed as being innocent of the charges against him. Recall that Baba Ijesha, was arrested a couple of months ago for allegedly defiling a minor and is facing charges in court for rape and child sexual molestation.
This movie has elicited heated criticisms and disapproval from social media users. Several of his colleagues in Nollywood has blasted him for being insensitive and immature to have decided to release such a movie at this present time.
Dayo Amusa, Tonto Dikeh, Mercy Aigbe, and many others have also lashed out at Yomi to have proven how insensitive he is and for also having the effrontery to promote the movie by sending the link to them. Many other Nigerians have also lambasted Yomi Fabiyi for creating such a movie and for using the names ‘Princess’ and ‘Iyabo’ to depict the real-life situation.
The film promptly sparked serious outrage on social media after it was released on YouTube. Many social media canvassed for the film to be reported and it was removed from YouTube barely 24 hours after it premiered.
