The National President of the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners, Mr, Olutoyin Ayinde, has urged the federal government to give adequate support to the Institution in order to tackle the menace of improper planning in view of the fast growing population.
Mr Ayinde made the call in Abuja the nation’s capital, while administering the Oath of Allegiance and Investiture to fifty-one fellows of the institution.
According to him, “lack of proper planning has become a major cause of some challenges in our urban cities ranging from Climate change to flooding among other natural disasters that is facing the country now”.
The National President adviced the new fellows to be honest, humble and embrace what will bring national development.
“I urge you to be the case study of the society, do not compromise your profession to destroy your nation,” said Mr Ayinde.
“The only resources Nigeria has is Land, in 1971 Nigerian population was 56 million that is fifty years back, but now we are more than 200 million on the same land, this poor planning contributes to some of the crisis of farmers headers clash, communal boundary clashes and many more which the government needs to take proper action urgently.”
The chairperson of the Federal Capital Territory Chapter of the institute, Mr, Mustapha Mudiwu, while welcoming the new fellows adviced them to avoid any act that will tarnish the reputation of their profession.
One of the investiture and fellow of the Institution, Mrs, Mairo Danladi, who expressed her joy also said the town planners played a key role in urban development of every nation and Nigerian government should give all the necessary support in moving the country forward.
Nigerian Institute of Town Planners was founded in 1966 and it is Nigeria’s leading Urban and Regional Planning body, the institution exists to advance the science of planning for the interest of the country.
The Institute inducted Fifty-One members among whom were seven Women.
