The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has vowed to rid Abuja roads of drug users.

The Secretary, FCT Transportation Secretariat, Abdullahi Candido who disclosed this when he toured the facilities of the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (DRTS), said there would be a compulsory drug test for motorists, especially commercial motor drivers, motorcyclists and Tricycle riders.

He noted with dismay the number of lives lost to senseless road accidents and called for government to conduct an immediate psych evaluation of road users.

Candido said his office would immediately initiate a memo to the FCT Minister and other stakeholders, on the need to commence regular drug test of not just motorists, but others who play key roles in the transportation system.

According to him, no responsible government would fold its hands and watch citizens die due to the carelessness of some road users.

This is something we have to put up a memo and let the FCTA okay it, we need to do it. We must certify peoples state of mental health before they use our roads.

“We will conduct drug test for all road users especially commercial road users.

“We will not wait until lives are endlessly lost before we take action. So we are taking action in order to ensure the city is safe for the citizens” Candido said.

Service delivery

Also Speaking, the Director DRTS, Abdulateef Bello said the directorate had established private public partnerships in order to achieve the best service delivery needed in Abuja.

Bello noted that the Directorate had embarked on several initiatives and enforcement projects to rid Abuja roads of several traffic obstructions.

He equally disclosed that while there was increased drive to generate more revenues, proactive measures had been shored up to ensure that FCT roads were safe for all.
