Transparency: Code of Conduct Bureau begins verification exercise

The Code of Conduct Bureau has begun a verification exercise that receives assets declarations from public officers in Nigeria.

The Chairman of the Bureau, Professor Mohammed Isah who disclosed this at a press briefing in Abuja, the nation’s capital said the exercise is tagged; “Assets Verification Exercise: Our Mandates! Our Objectives!!.”

Professor Isah said that; “The Bureau is empowered to examine asset declarations in accordance with the requirements of the Code of Conduct and retain the custody of such declarations.”

He explained that the essence of the exercise was to curb corruption in the country.

“This exercise is in tandem with the President Buhari, policy on corruption, transparency and accountability in the conduct of government businesses, the Bureau is empowered to administer assets declaration which includes examining the declarations in accordance with the requirements of Code of Conduct or any Law and retaining the custody of such declarations.” Professor Isah said.

According to him, the provision of the Constitution clears any doubt as to whether the Bureau has the power to carry out verification exercises or not.

The Chairman added that; “It is in line with the agenda and commitment of the administration of President Muhammadu Buhari that no stone will be left unturned in fighting corruption in the country.
