113

In a thrilling encounter at the ICC Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup, Nigeria’s Junior Yellow Greens made history in Malaysia with a stunning two-run victory over New Zealand.

This win marked Nigeria’s first-ever triumph on the global stage, an achievement that will resonate through the cricketing community for years to come.

Having endured a washout in their opening fixture, Nigeria finally took the field in Sarawak for a reduced 13-over game. Captain Lucky Piety set the tone for her team’s historic day by smashing Nigeria’s first-ever World Cup six.

Despite New Zealand’s tight bowling effort that left Nigeria at 28 for three after the powerplay, the Yellow Greens showed grit and determination.

Lilian Ude top-scored with 19 runs, while Omosigho Eguakun added a crucial boundary off the final delivery to push Nigeria’s total to 66. Though modest, the score proved to be enough for the spirited Nigerian side.

The game began dramatically for Nigeria as they took their first World Cup wicket on the first ball, running out Kate Irwin without her facing a delivery. Emma McLeod followed soon after, departing for just three runs.

While New Zealand’s Eve Wolland and Anika Todd attempted to steady the innings, Nigeria’s bowlers and fielders maintained relentless pressure.

Ude’s final over was a masterclass in composure and skill, conceding just six runs while executing a run-out off the final ball to seal the win.

Captain Lucky Piety’s all-round brilliance earned her the Player of the Match accolade. Her composed knock of 18 runs off 22 balls and decisive leadership ensured Nigeria’s hard-fought victory.

This historic win not only cements Nigeria’s place in World Cup lore, but also inspires aspiring cricketers across the nation. The Junior Yellow Greens have shown that with determination, teamwork and belief, dreams can come true.
