Vice President Kashim Shettima has returned to Abuja from Luanda, Angola, after representing President Bola Tinubu at the 7th African Union–European Union (AU–EU) Summit.

VP Shettima had departed South Africa for Angola on Sunday, following his participation at the 2025 G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, where he also stood in for President Tinubu.

While addressing African and European leaders in Luanda, he delivered President Tinubu’s message, in which the Nigerian leader renewed Africa’s long-standing demand for permanent seats—complete with veto powers—on the United Nations Security Council.

The President stressed that “reforms to global governance structures are overdue and must reflect contemporary geopolitical realities.”

President Tinubu also urged the European Union to jointly design peace and security initiatives with Africa, using African-led frameworks as the foundation for lasting stability on the continent.

Reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to promoting peace, security, and democratic governance across Africa, the President said, “The country will continue to work closely with the EU to advance a more stable, just, and prosperous global order.”

Earlier, during the opening session of the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, President Tinubu—represented by Shettima, called for “the creation of a fairer and more responsive global system to manage financial flows, including a sincere approach to resolving the recurring sovereign debt crises affecting many economies.”

President Tinubu emphasised the need for a global framework that ensures host communities of critical minerals in Nigeria and across Africa benefit from value addition at the source.

He also supported the establishment of global ethical standards for Artificial Intelligence (AI) to help drive inclusive development worldwide.
