VP Osinbajo inaugurates National Road Safety Advisory Council

Nigeria’s Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo has inaugurated the National Road Safety Advisory Council to further demonstrate the government’s continued commitment to addressing the challenges of road safety in the country.

The Advisory Council is a critical aspect of the updated National Road Safety Strategy adopted by the National Economic Council and approved by the Federal Executive Council late last year.

The Road Safety Advisory Council is chaired by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, with the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Mr Boboye Oyeyemi as Secretary.

Other members of the 29-member Advisory Council include six governors representing the six geo-political zones of Nigeria.

The governors are Willie Obiano, Anambra State, representing the South-East zone; Ifeanyi Okowa, Delta State, representing the South-South zone; and Babajide Sanwo-Olu, Lagos State, representing the South-West zone.

Others are Muhammad Inuwa Yahaya, Gombe State representing the North-East zone; Nasir El-Rufai, Kaduna State, representing North-West and Abdulrahman AbdulRasaq, Kwara State, representing the North-Central zone.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, ministers of transportation, works, health, justice and education are also members of the Council

Others are the ministers of finance, budget and national planning, environment, labour and employment, police affairs and interior and the Federal Capital Territory.

The National Security Adviser, President, Association of Local Government of Nigeria (ALGON); President, Nigeria Association of Chambers of Commerce, Industry, Mines and Agriculture (NACCIMA), President, Nigerian Society of Engineers and Board Chairman, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) – Member are also members of the Council.

The Corps Marshall of the Federal Road Safety Corps, Boboye Oyeyemi said that the Council is a critical part of the structure of the Nigerian Road Safety Strategy, Version 2, 2021 to 2030, which was adopted last year by the National Economic Council and approved by the Federal Executive Council.

“The Council will ensure the effective implementation of the strategy, which centres on a safe system approach to road safety based on global standards and also the five pillars of the Nigerian Road Safety Strategy, which is the second UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2021 to 2030,” Oyeyemi stated.

According to him, the strategy presented to the meeting of the National Economic Council is a successor to the previous one that lasted between 2014 to 2018 adding that the new edition is a decade document, which would subsist between 2021 and 2030.
