Wimbledon: Tunisian Tennis Star Ons Jabeur Advances
Tunisian tennis star Ons Jabeur advanced to the second round of the Wimbledon Championships after a 6-2, 6-1 straight set victory against Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson in the first round.
Jabeur, 26, was in good forming going into Wimbledon as she is coming off the back of winning her first singles title, the Birmingham Classic. She beat Russia’s Daria Kasatkina in straight sets in the final to also become the first Arab to win a Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) title.
It was Jabeur’s first win against Peterson, having twice lost to her previously in 2018 and 2019.
Jabeur, ranked 24th in the world, reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open in 2020 — her best in a Grand Slam tournament so far. At Wimbledon in 2018, she was beaten in the second round.
The Tunisian has played in Wimbledon three times but has never gone past the second round. She will be hoping her recent victories will get her further in the prestigious tournament.
She also aspires to go further than her best in a Grand Slam by reaching the semi-finals.
