As part of the activities to mark this year’s World Food Day, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has trained 100 Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) at New Kuchingoro in Abuja on new farming techniques and empowered them with farm inputs.

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr Mahmood Abubakar said the objective of the World Food Day celebration is to fight hunger, poverty and malnutrition.

He said the federal government is aware of the plight of the IDPs and it’s making efforts to take them back to their homes.

“We are here as representatives of the Federal Government of Nigeria from the Federal Ministry of Agriculture & Rural Development to celebrate with you the 2021 World Food Day.

“The World Food Day is held annually on October, 16 across the world in over 150 countries. The objective is to fight hunger, poverty and malnutrition among the population.

“We are here to empower you, share some food items and farm inputs that would enable you to produce your own food within your locations in the camp. This goes with the saying that ‘it’s better to teach a person to fish than to give a person a fish.

“At this juncture, let me remind you that the Federal Government is aware of your situation and feels so much about your condition. We love you and pray for you. We remember you on this important occasion of the World Food Day and we are here to celebrate with you”, the Minister noted.

Responding, the leader of the IDPs, Luka Yatuma commended the Federal Government for their gesture of teaching the IDPs new farming techniques.

This is the time that we have been waiting for and this is the day we are waiting for. We are very excited because we are feeling the impact of the government. You are coming with what we have been doing to make sure that you teach us a new method on how to farm, we are so happy,” Yatuma said.
