Abdulbaqi Jari, the convener of World Hausa Day in Daura, Katsina State, has called for Hausa to be adopted as a communication medium across the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
Jari made the appeal during a press briefing for 2025 World Hausa Day celebrations scheduled holding on Tuesday, 26 August in Daura.
He urged the Nigerian government to recognise Hausa as the country’s national language, citing its wide reach and numerical strength, which he said qualified it to serve as a unifying medium.
“This is a matter of linguistic and cultural independence for African people,” Jari said.
He explained that several African countries have already elevated indigenous languages, supporting them to promote pride, identity, and effective communication among their citizens.
According to him, Hausa fits this profile as it is widely spoken not only in Nigeria but also across several West African nations within ECOWAS. He added that adopting Hausa at the regional level would enhance communication, trade, commerce, and social interaction.
Jari also invited Nigerians interested in culture and history to participate in the Daura celebrations, which will showcase authentic Hausa heritage and traditions.

He emphasised security consciousness during the event, reminding visitors that Daura is the historic centre and birthplace of Hausa civilisation.
Preparations for the celebration, he said, had been finalised in collaboration with the Daura Emirate Council, including venue arrangements, security, and government support.
“We remind participants, especially travellers, to be security conscious, journey during daytime, and familiarise themselves with the environment before arrival,” Jari advised.
He expressed gratitude to partners, particularly the Katsina State Government and the Daura Emirate Council, for their support.
The organising committee also commended the Minister of Arts, Culture, Tourism and Creativity, Hajiya Hannatu Musawa, for her commitment to cultural promotion.
