The Government of Zambia has announced plans to integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into its education system to support the country’s competence-based curriculum.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education, Kelvin Mambwe, disclosed this in an interview with the state broadcaster on Sunday, noting that the initiative is aimed at improving classroom efficiency, reducing teachers’ workload, and enhancing learning outcomes.
According to him, the adoption of AI will assist educators in delivering lessons more effectively while enabling students to better engage with their studies.
He added that the ministry will soon commence orientation programmes focused on the ethical use of AI, as part of efforts to ensure responsible deployment of the technology.
Mambwe further explained that the government is putting in place measures to properly train teachers ahead of the rollout.
He said the initiative also includes plans to digitalise schools and expand internet access across the country, particularly in rural communities, to equip learners for a technology-driven future.
The Permanent Secretary noted that AI tools will support pupils in developing projects and activities under the competence-based curriculum, while aligning Zambia’s education system with global standards.
