Zimbabwe has delivered a third consignment of humanitarian maize to Malawi, handing over 330 metric tonnes in Lilongwe, as the country battles the effects of recent floods and a deepening food crisis.
Malawi’s Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister, George Chaponda received the donation and said the support had arrived at a critical moment.
“This support has brought hope to Malawians and demonstrates the strong spirit of solidarity between our two countries,” the Minister said.
Malawi’s Department of Disaster Management Affairs will coordinate the distribution of the maize to households affected by the floods and poor harvests.
Senior government officials, diplomats and invited guests witnessed the handover.
The latest shipment brings Zimbabwe’s total donation to 1,000 tonnes, supplied in phases.
Malawi is still recovering from destructive floods that swept through several districts earlier this year, washing away crops, damaging infrastructure and worsening already fragile food security conditions.
Also, the government has warned that poor harvests and weather‑related shocks have left hundreds of thousands of households in need of assistance.
