A fresh wave of defections has hit the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in Adamawa State as 39 Special Advisers to Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri announced their resignation from the party and declared their allegiance to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The advisers, in a joint statement issued on Friday and signed by Bala Jada, said their decision followed wide consultations with grassroots stakeholders, including community leaders, youth and women’s groups, as well as professional associations across the state.
They attributed their exit from the PDP to what they described as prolonged internal disputes and ongoing litigations at the national level, which they said have generated uncertainty about the party’s immediate future.
“Governance must be anchored in pragmatism and strategic foresight,” the statement read. “The overriding responsibility of leadership is to protect stability, sustain development momentum, and secure political alignment that enhances, not constrains, state progress.”
The advisers stressed that their defection was not driven by resentment or a rejection of political ideals, but rather by what they termed a calculated step to safeguard Adamawa State’s strategic interests within the federation.
They reaffirmed their commitment to unity, peaceful engagement and responsible politics, pledging to continue consolidating development gains and strengthening democratic institutions in the state.
According to them, political actors would ultimately be judged not by party labels but by the tangible impact of their decisions on the lives of citizens.
In a related development, fourteen Local Government Chairmen under the Association of Local Governments of Nigeria (ALGON) in Adamawa State also announced their resignation from the PDP and subsequent defection to the APC.
Speaking on their behalf, the Chairman of Toungo Local Government Area, Suleiman Gankuba, said the decision was guided by conviction and a shared resolve to align with the governor in the interest of continuity and grassroots development.
“Our movement is not an abandonment of principles but a reaffirmation of them,” the statement read. “We are joining the APC as partners ready to work, not as strangers. We stand with vision and resolve to deepen development and strengthen governance.” Gankuba said
He explained that their alignment with the APC is aimed at consolidating ongoing development efforts and ensuring sustained growth across the local government areas.
Meanwhile, seven other ALGON members in the state are reportedly consulting with key stakeholders and supporters before announcing their final position.
